Margaret Lee
"It’s not that I’m not taking (this) seriously"
Jack Hanley Gallery
October 13—November 13, 2016
Although Margaret Lee is primarily known as Cindy Sherman’s studio manager and the co-owner of tiny downtown downtown gallery 47 Canal with her boyfriend Oliver Newton, she in recent years has proven herself as a compelling mixed media artist. The artist participated in prestigious Hammer Museum Biennial in 2014 and Biennale de Lyon in 2013 as well as numerous group exhibitions in New York and elsewhere. Lee, whose fruit and furniture adorned sculptures are known to maneuver around commercial taste and conceptual aesthetic, returns to Jack Hanley Gallery following her 2014 exhibition which had presented a Yayoi Kusama-esque installation.
In an interview with T Magazine in August 2013, Lee said, “I just wanted to make the most basic thing I could think of. It’s a very democratic food; it’s not exotic at all,” talking about a potato, one of many vegetables she uses during her process. “I don’t like emotions,” she adds when asked why there are no humans in her artworks. While the content of the exhibition remains unclear, be prepared for some edibles integrated into plaster sculptures.
